The operations of a Lazio-based Covid-19 vaccination registration system have been brought to a standstill after a cyberattack shut down its system.
According to Cyberscoop, president of the Lazio region Nicola Zingaretti said in a Facebook post on Monday that the area had suffered a ‘cyberattack of criminal origin’.
The local government does not currently know who caused the attack, while Italian authorities have commented that the incident is ‘the most grave on an Italian government agency ever’.
Zingaretti remarked that the attack won’t interfere with anyone who has already booked a vaccine appointment – however, new appointments have been temporarily suspended, even though health and financial data ‘seems safe’.
The Lazio president added, “The attack blocked almost all files in the data center. At the moment the system is shut down to allow internal verification and to prevent the spread of the virus introduced with the attack.”
The Lazio government has said that vaccine registration services are expected to be restored within 72 hours.
Recently, Ireland’s healthcare service the Irish Health Service Executive was temporarily forced to shut down its computer systems as a precaution following a significant ransomware attack.
