Kin, a direct-to-consumer home insurance company, announced its latest expansion into Alabama.

Renowned for being a tech-savvy insurer, Kin utilises its proprietary technology to price and assess risks accurately, providing customised policies. Kin’s success in Florida and other coastal states, where it covers nearly $45bn in assets, has laid the groundwork for its new venture.

Alabama is currently ranked fourth in the U.S. for tornadoes, large hail, and damaging wind reports. Coupled with its coastal location, residents often face a series of natural disasters, including hurricanes. As a result, the state has seen home insurance rates approximately 15% higher than the national average. It’s in this challenging environment that Kin aims to deliver affordable and comprehensive coverage.

Kin’s CEO, Sean Harper, said, “We’re re-engineering insurance so that it’s cost-effective and superior through every step of the customer journey, including purchasing, servicing, and claims.” Harper underlined the crucial role of their proprietary technology, which helps in accurately assessing risk and pricing, offering personalised, high-touch assistance to fine-tune policies according to the customer’s needs.

Traditional insurers often spend 15% of their premiums on commissions for outside agents, in addition to other associated costs. Kin, however, has eliminated these expenses by establishing a direct line to consumers. This business model not only helps save people money but also facilitates immediate response to any issues that may arise.

The entry of Kin into Alabama follows its successful ventures in South Carolina and Mississippi. It’s worth noting that Kin provides coverage through its newly formed reciprocal exchange, the Kin Interinsurance Nexus Exchange, which holds an Exceptional Financial Stability Rating of A from Demotech.
