CyberNut unveils K-12 cybersecurity awareness, bags $800k pre-seed

CyberNut, a Miami, Florida-based startup, recently stepped out of stealth mode. The company has introduced a novel security awareness training platform specifically designed for the K-12 education sector.

According to Security Week, the firm announced the closure of an $800,000 pre-seed funding round. The investment was led by the Charter School Growth Fund, Avalanche VC, and the Transcend Network.

CyberNut has created an AI-powered, gamified training tool. This tool is designed to educate teachers, faculty, staff, and students on how to recognise and report phishing attacks. The company has tailored its solution to fit the unique operational and budgetary constraints typical of schools.

The funds from this round will be used to enhance the platform’s features and expand its reach within the United States. CyberNut aims to make its cybersecurity training tools more accessible to school districts, helping them mitigate the risks associated with data breaches and cyberattacks.

The company is already seeing positive outcomes from its deployment. It currently works with 50 school districts, and reports indicate that its training significantly improves the ability of users to identify phishing emails and report suspicious activities promptly.

CyberNut CEO and co-founder Oliver Page commented on the urgency of addressing digital safety in schools. “As an advocate for digital safety in education, I cannot stress enough the immense risk that data breaches pose to our students,” Page said. “It’s not just the potential for financial disruption; it’s also the psychological toll that identity theft can have on students as young as middle or high schoolers. A single phishing attack can lead to hundreds, sometimes thousands, of students’ personal information being compromised and up to millions of dollars in damages to a school or district.”

“Our approach is unconventional yet effective; we leverage gamification to transform cybersecurity training into an engaging, empowering training process,” Page added.
