ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is working on developing its first international standard on net zero.
Known for its robust standards across various industries, ISO is expected to launch this new standard at COP30 in November 2025.
The forthcoming standard aims to provide clarity on the net zero transition, set robust requirements, and ultimately enable independently verified and comprehensive climate action to accelerate progress towards a sustainable world.
This is being developed to offer a global solution that guides organisations in their journey towards net zero. As part of ISO’s commitment to supporting the net zero transition, this standard addresses the market demand for credible and verifiable guidelines suitable for all sizes, sectors, and geographies.
ISO’s work spans over 170 countries, collaborating with thousands of experts to create standards that impact everyday life and business practices worldwide.
The new net zero standard will evolve from the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, which were launched at COP27. These guidelines facilitated organisations in creating comprehensive net zero strategies by providing credible best practices.
The forthcoming standard will enhance public confidence and guard against greenwashing by setting robust guidance and requirements that verify the credibility of net zero claims.
Additional details about the standard include the involvement of national standards bodies from more than 170 countries and a public consultation expected to open later in 2025. This will ensure global input and representation, considering the latest climate science to create a well-rounded and effective standard.
The formal launch of the development process was announced at London Climate Action Week by Noelia Garcia Nebra, ISO’s Head of Sustainability.
The British Standards Institution (BSI), in collaboration with ICONTEC, Colombia’s National Standards Body, is convening the process. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of international cooperation in achieving a sustainable future.
