HSBC has announced a significant change in its leadership structure, as Celine Herweijer steps down as Group Chief Sustainability Officer.
According to ESG Today, Julian Wentzel, currently serving as Head of Global Banking for the MENAT region, is set to take over as Interim Group Chief Sustainability Officer. This move comes following HSBC’s strategic decision in October to streamline its executive team from 18 to 12 members, reflecting a shift in its governance model.
Under Herweijer’s leadership, who joined HSBC in 2021, the bank advanced its environmental agenda significantly. HSBC has been instrumental in shaping its net zero strategy, including setting ambitious decarbonization targets for its portfolio. This year marked a notable milestone with the launch of HSBC’s first Net Zero Transition Plan, which delineates the bank’s commitments and strategies to support and finance the global transition to a low-carbon economy.
Julian Wentzel will assume the role of Interim Group Chief Sustainability Officer at a critical juncture. His current role in Global Banking, coupled with his new responsibilities, positions him as a pivotal figure in driving HSBC’s continued commitment to its sustainability goals.
Celine Herweijer brought extensive experience from her tenure as Global Sustainability and Innovation Leader at PwC to HSBC, where she has been a strong advocate for sustainable finance. Julian Wentzel’s background in global banking provides him with the necessary insights and expertise to lead the bank’s sustainability strategies forward.
The restructuring of HSBC’s leadership team reflects a broader strategic realignment within the bank, emphasizing efficiency and a focused executive decision-making process. This change aligns with the bank’s ongoing efforts to adapt to global economic and environmental challenges.
Celine Herweijer expressed her pride in HSBC’s achievements in sustainability, stating: “I am deeply proud of what we have achieved at HSBC to support the global sustainability agenda. I believe that HSBC – as one of the world’s largest banks – has a key role to play in financing the transition across the global economy and supporting our customers.” HSBC also acknowledged Herweijer’s contributions, noting, “Celine has made a lasting impact on the Group and leaves with our thanks and best wishes for the future,” and reiterated their commitment to supporting the net zero transition as a core business strategy pillar.
