81% of financial firms fear ‘automation armageddon’ due to process complexity

The 2025 State of Process Orchestration and Automation Report by Camunda has uncovered alarming statistics, revealing that 81% of financial services organisations are increasingly concerned about “digital chaos” caused by complex, interconnected, and automated business processes.

These organisations now manage an average of 50 endpoints for task execution, which they believe significantly heightens business risks.

According to the report, this complexity not only makes process management challenging but also heightens the risk of compliance breaches, with 81% of respondents citing increased compliance risks. Furthermore, 71% of organisations reported an increased risk of core business process failures, which could potentially lead to what Camunda has termed “Automation Armageddon.”

Camunda’s Senior Vice President of Customer Success, Kurt Petersen, emphasised the critical nature of end-to-end process orchestration and automation in delivering business outcomes. “In today’s digital landscape, organisations face the challenge of complex and interdependent digital infrastructures,” Petersen said. “Without decisive action, automation programs risk overwhelming organisations with fragile solutions, excessive total cost of ownership, and reduced agility, ultimately causing those without robust automation control to fall behind.”

The report also highlights challenges in scaling and operationalising artificial intelligence (AI) within organisations. Despite the eagerness to expand AI capabilities, 79% of organisations struggle with its implementation across business operations, and 78% reported regulatory compliance issues due to a lack of transparency in AI applications. Moreover, 93% believe that AI must be fully integrated into orchestrated processes to maximise investment returns and business value.

Unlocking value from automation remains a significant challenge for many. While 80% of the surveyed organisations recognise the need for better tools to manage process intersections, 77% admit to a lack of control over their existing automations. Notably, 90% of respondents stated that hyperautomation is unachievable without effective process orchestration, and 79% believe achieving an autonomous enterprise is a pipe dream without it.
