Atom bank has officially opened its new headquarters at the historic Pattern Shop in Newcastle, relocating its 600-strong workforce from Durham to the Grade II listed building that once housed Robert Stephenson & Co.
According to Business Cloud, the move represents a multi-million-pound investment and marks a major milestone in Atom’s evolution as one of the UK’s leading digital banks. The restored Pattern Shop will serve as a hub for innovation and collaboration, designed to enhance creativity and foster a modern, flexible working environment.
This relocation also supports Atom’s pioneering four-day working week, introduced in 2021, which continues to form a key part of its culture and employee value proposition. The company said the move reinforces its commitment to the North East while promoting a more progressive way of working within the financial sector.
As part of its expansion, Atom is recruiting nearly 30 new team members across multiple departments, including 14 roles in customer support. Additional openings span engineering, data and operations as the company seeks to scale its operations from its new base.
Atom bank CEO Mark Mullen said, “Our move to the Pattern Shop isn’t just a change of address; it’s a bold statement about our future and our belief in the North East.”
“We’re investing in a space that celebrates our region’s industrial past while providing a modern, flexible, and inspiring home for our people.
“This new chapter will help us attract top talent and continue to challenge the status quo, proving that a truly innovative and profitable business can thrive right here in the North East.”
Beyond business growth, Atom remains committed to supporting education and social mobility in the region. The company works closely with local schools and universities through its Early Careers Programme, including the Atom Futures Fund, which assists students from low-income and care backgrounds. It also runs the AMI Women in Technology Scholarships at Durham University, designed to promote gender diversity in STEM careers.
Founded in 2014 and launched to the public in 2016, Atom was the UK’s first app-based bank. Today, it is one of the country’s highest-rated digital lenders, managing more than £4bn in customer deposits while continuing to redefine what a modern bank can achieve outside London’s financial centre.
