Mercury puts AI agents on the company spending line

Mercury, the FinTech company behind a business banking platform for scaling companies, has launched Mercury Spend, enabling businesses to issue cards to employees and AI agents while controlling expenditure from the same banking dashboard.

The new offering is built around giving businesses more granular control over how money is spent. Founders and administrators can allocate budgets for areas such as travel, software and procurement, with card limits enforced at the point of sale. Spending can also be restricted to specific merchants or merchant categories.

Mercury has introduced a card type specifically for AI agents. A human must issue the card, while its activity can be tracked, audited and cancelled. The agent can transact only within the parameters assigned to it, meaning the spending limits cannot be changed or bypassed by the agent itself.

The launch also links spend management with bookkeeping. Administrators can create rules that determine how transactions are allocated to budgets and accounting systems, while receipts can be collected through a Gmail inbox scan or submitted by employees via text message.

Mercury has also built controls around missing documentation. Cards can be automatically frozen when a receipt, memo or category is outstanding and remain frozen until the relevant requirement is completed. Spend information is displayed alongside cash position and runway within the same dashboard.

The company’s Command natural-language AI layer can also be used to manage spending and other financial tasks through conversation. Customers can use it to check their cash position, manage spending or send an invoice, with actions subject to approval.

Mercury said its platform combines business banking with cards, invoicing, bill pay, spend management and financial insights. The company says it is trusted by more than 300,000 entrepreneurs.

The Mercury Spend launch comes alongside a limited-edition IO card created with sculptor, ceramicist and designer Simone Bodmer-Turner. The card is based on an original sculpture created for Mercury and uses layered printing to produce a dimensional finish.

Mercury Spend is now available to Mercury’s existing business banking customers.

Mercury CEO Immad Akhund said, “Companies can be smaller and faster than they were two years ago, and they’re a mix of people and agents doing real work.”

He added, “Founders need a scalable and programmatic way to manage spending, understand where money is going, and automate the busywork of receipts and accounting. With Mercury Spend, founders can give their teams and agents a real spending infrastructure, not just a card.”
