Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs has introduced the Scams (Countermeasures) and Other Matters Bill, tabled for its first reading in parliament on Tuesday, in a move to tighten the legal framework used to combat scam activity across the country.
According to Xinhua Net, the bill proposes amendments to the Protection from Scams Act and the Online Criminal Harms Act (OCHA), alongside related legislation, with the aim of improving how authorities detect, disrupt and deter scams, according to the ministry.
Several measures sit within the proposed changes. These include new provisions to enable and protect the exchange of scam-related data between police and service providers, an expanded Facility Restriction Framework that would limit the services accessible to individuals linked to scam activity, fresh offences aimed at curbing the misuse of online accounts, reinforcements to the OCHA, and steps intended to sharpen the effectiveness of police operations.
The ministry said, “Scams are evolving rapidly, and Singapore’s laws must keep pace.”
