Digital asset spending surges through OKX Card in Europe

OKX, a global FinTech company and digital asset trading platform, has reported a significant increase in everyday spending through its OKX Card in Europe, with purchase volume rising 280% year-on-year this summer as customers increasingly use digital assets for groceries, transport and fuel.

Card transactions increased 178% over the same period, according to OKX. The company said the figures indicate digital assets are increasingly being used beyond trading and investment, with consumers applying them to routine purchases. OKX also reported that digital asset card purchase volume across the wider market reached a record $759m in July.

The trend was particularly pronounced across Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and France. The number of monthly OKX Card users purchasing groceries increased 65% between February and July. Growth accelerated between May and July, when the number of grocery users increased 221%, while users spending on transport and fuel rose 263%.

Spending growth during those three months was even stronger. Grocery purchase volume increased 482%, while spending on transport and fuel rose 530%. The figures suggest both an increase in the number of customers using the card and greater spending activity among existing users.

Poland recorded the highest proportion of OKX Card spending across groceries, transport and utilities, which together represented 31.7% of spending in the country. The corresponding figures were 22.2% in the Netherlands, 20.4% in Germany and 14.1% in France. Groceries were the most consistent everyday spending category across the four markets, accounting for between 9.5% and 19.3% of total card spending.

The OKX Card connects customers’ digital asset holdings with everyday payments and combines spending, rewards and earning features within the OKX ecosystem. Users can add funds to their OKX Pay account using fiat currency, eligible stablecoins or digital assets. Eligible USDG holdings can generate 3.5% APY through Pay Boost via DeFi before those funds are used for spending.

Payments are processed through the Mastercard network, with Apple Pay and Google Pay also supported where available. OKX said customers can receive between 2% and 10% cashback on eligible everyday purchases, alongside 50% rebates on selected subscriptions including Netflix and ChatGPT. VIP customers can access higher cashback rates and additional benefits based on their OKX status.

OKX Europe CEO Erald Ghoos said, “The most interesting part of this growth isn’t simply that customers are spending more with their OKX Card. It’s what they’re spending on. Groceries, transport and fuel are part of everyday life, and we’re seeing both the number of customers using their Card for these purchases and the amount they’re spending increase rapidly. That’s an important signal for where digital assets are heading. The next stage of adoption isn’t about asking people to change how they pay. It’s about giving them more choice, utility and value within the payment experiences they already use.”

Ghoos added, “Consumers don’t need another card that simply lets them pay. The opportunity is to make the money behind those payments work harder. With OKX, customers can move more naturally between holding, earning and spending while continuing to use the payment experiences they’re already familiar with. The more customers engage with OKX, the more value they can unlock, not only when they trade, but when they hold and when they spend.”

The figures point to a shift in how digital asset-linked payment products are being used, with everyday categories such as food, transport and fuel accounting for an increasing share of activity among OKX Card users in several European markets.
