Revolut clears US hurdle on path to national bank

Revolut has taken a major step towards establishing a banking presence in the US after securing conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a national bank charter.

The approval moves the global FinTech closer to launching a fully fledged US bank, although further regulatory hurdles remain. Revolut is continuing discussions with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Federal Reserve, while also pursuing final OCC approval. The company remains on track to launch its proposed US bank in 2027.

If approved, the bank would allow US customers to access a broader range of Revolut services, including loans, credit cards, FDIC-insured deposits, and cryptocurrency and stablecoin offerings. The move would also allow Revolut to bring more of its financial services directly to US customers rather than relying on third-party banking partners.

Revolut, which serves more than 80 million customers globally, has built its business around a digital “super app” offering banking and money management services through a single platform. The US banking application represents a significant part of its wider international expansion strategy.

The company has been expanding across the Americas, having recently launched its Mexican bank while progressing regulatory applications in Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Argentina. Revolut has also secured banking licences in France, Australia and the UK during 2026, alongside a payments licence in the UAE, while its banking licence application in South Africa remains underway.

The expansion comes as Revolut targets 100 million customers globally by the middle of 2027, increasing the importance of securing direct regulatory infrastructure in major markets.

Revolut founder and CEO Nik Storonsky said, “Conditional OCC approval is an important first step towards establishing the proposed Revolut Bank US. It gives us the foundation to build in the world’s largest financial market and bring the full Revolut experience to millions of Americans.”

Revolut US CEO Cetin Duransoy added, “We’re grateful for the OCC’s open and transparent dialogue throughout this process. They were both diligent and expedient with our application, allowing us to remain on track for a 2027 launch of our proposed national bank.”

The conditional approval gives Revolut a clearer route into the US banking market, but the next regulatory stages will determine when the FinTech can turn its proposed national bank into an operating business.
