Corgi Insurance, an AI-focused InsurTech carrier serving high-growth companies, has introduced a new insurance programme designed to cover data centre risks from the build phase through to ongoing operations and the technology housed within each facility.
Rather than requiring operators to source separate policies for different stages of a data centre’s lifecycle, the programme brings construction, operational and equipment risks into a single insurance solution.
For facilities still under development, Corgi provides builders’ risk insurance as well as delay in start-up cover. The latter is designed to respond when an insured event prevents a data centre from opening on schedule. The protection continues once a facility is operational, covering core infrastructure such as power systems, cooling equipment and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). Operators can also access business income protection if an insured incident results in a temporary shutdown.
The programme also addresses one of the most significant assets inside modern AI data centres: GPUs. Corgi has introduced residual value protection intended to help treat GPU hardware as a financeable asset, providing cover for the equipment supporting AI and high-performance computing. The offering is being targeted at colocation providers, GPU cloud businesses, AI compute hosts, enterprise and edge data centres, and companies developing new facilities.
The move reflects the growing importance of data centres to the AI economy. As demand for computing power rises, operators are facing a more complex risk environment covering everything from construction and energy supply to cooling systems, hardware failures and business interruption.
The rapid build-out of AI infrastructure is also shifting attention towards the physical resources required to sustain it. Data centre capacity, access to GPUs, and the substantial power and water requirements of high-performance computing are becoming increasingly important considerations for businesses and investors.
Corgi said the new programme is intended to provide coverage across these different stages and risks, from the construction of a facility through to the operation of the infrastructure and hardware inside it.
The InsurTech combines proprietary underwriting technology with in-house claims handling and insurance infrastructure, with a focus on supporting fast-growing businesses.
Corgi co-founder Nico Laqua said, “Data centers are becoming some of the most important infrastructure in the world, but the insurance around them hasn’t evolved at the same pace. We’re building insurance around the entire data center, from the moment construction starts to the hardware running inside it.”
