Nettle raises $4.8m to speed up insurance risk inspections

Nettle, an InsurTech offering an AI-powered workspace for commercial insurance Loss Control, has secured $4.8m in an oversubscribed seed round as it prepares to grow its presence globally.

MTech led the investment, which also drew backing from Project A, SVV (Sure Valley Ventures), Portfolio Ventures and Ventures Together. This latest raise lifts the company’s total capital to $6.8m, coming after a $2m pre-seed round completed in March 2025.

Nettle plans to put the fresh capital towards expansion in the US and Europe, as well as scaling up its engineering and go-to-market functions.

The startup is targeting a growing challenge in commercial insurance, where the volume of risks needing assessment keeps rising while the pool of seasoned risk engineers is shrinking. Some teams are already dealing with backlogs stretching as long as six months, and around 40% of risk engineers are predicted to retire by 2030.

To tackle this, Nettle unifies risk identification, evidence gathering, analysis and reporting within a single platform. The company says insurers using its technology can carry out risk inspections five times faster and oversee risk more effectively throughout the life of a policy. As a result, underwriters receive better-quality information sooner, while risk engineers can concentrate on cases that genuinely require their specialist knowledge.

The platform can flag potential exposures remotely using AI and external data ahead of any site visit, and offers guided inspections so that risk engineers, agents and policyholders can gather data in a consistent way. It automatically examines images, video, audio, documents and third-party information, then generates reports, risk scores and recommendations in seconds rather than days.

Insurers already using Nettle include Allianz and Brotherhood Mutual, with operations spanning Europe, the US and Asia. While the solution was first designed for Commercial Property, it now covers other lines such as Liability, Construction and Workers’ Compensation. Building on its success with risk engineers, the business is now opening its technology to agents and policyholders, enabling insurers to gather risk information from locations that were previously too costly to inspect.

Nettle co-founder and CEO Jack Miller said, “Nettle has built a platform that turns Loss Control into a competitive advantage. The purpose has always been to prevent losses, but insurers can only act on the risks they understand.

“Too often, that understanding is limited by the capacity of their teams, and that’s the ceiling we’re removing. Our AI workspace gives insurers the tools to bring more of the portfolio into view, either through risk engineers, agents, or even policyholders. This round lets us take what we’ve proven across three continents, with extremely positive feedback, and scale it everywhere our customers operate.

MTech founder and managing partner Kevin McLoughlin said, “Nettle has built a next-generation platform for risk engineers in their assessment of site risk for large commercial customers. Using generative AI, top global insurers are adopting the Nettle platform, which requires minimal integration effort, to transform physical data collection and analyses for large commercial risks. We are very impressed with Nettle’s success to date and the deep experience the founders bring to an area of insurance often overlooked by start-ups.”
