Coverdash embeds pay-as-you-go workers’ comp into 7shifts Payroll

Coverdash, an embedded insurance provider, has partnered with restaurant HR platform 7shifts to offer pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation through 7shifts Payroll, linking insurance premiums to actual wage data rather than annual estimates.

The integration allows restaurant operators to access workers’ compensation when signing up for 7shifts Payroll and purchase a policy with one click after their first payroll run. Through Coverdash, users can compare quotes from more than 40 carriers, complete purchases and access Certificates of Insurance (COIs) without leaving the platform.

The partnership addresses a longstanding challenge for restaurants, where hourly staffing, seasonal hiring and employee turnover can cause payroll costs to fluctuate significantly throughout the year.

Traditional workers’ compensation policies are generally priced using projected annual payroll figures, potentially resulting in higher upfront costs and adjustments when actual wages are reconciled. By connecting premiums directly to payroll data, Coverdash aims to help restaurant operators keep insurance costs aligned with their actual wage expenditure as staffing needs change.

The deal expands Coverdash’s strategy of embedding commercial insurance into the software platforms businesses already use to manage their operations. Restaurants represent a particularly relevant market because of their variable staffing requirements and complex day-to-day workforce management needs.

Coverdash provides technology that enables partner platforms to integrate insurance into existing products and customer workflows. Based in New York and licensed across all 50 US states, the company aims to simplify how businesses research, purchase and manage commercial insurance.

Meanwhile, 7shifts provides restaurant operators with tools for recruiting, onboarding, training, scheduling, attendance tracking, tip management, payroll and employee retention, alongside real-time point-of-sale data synchronisation. The company says its platform replaces as many as five separate systems for 55,000 restaurants and serves more than 1.5 million restaurant professionals.

7shifts CEO Jordan Boesch said, “Restaurant operators already rely on 7shifts to manage their entire HR workflow and payroll, so adding Workers’ Compensation to that workflow is a natural fit. Partnering with Coverdash gives operators a simpler, more flexible way to manage coverage as their business changes.”

Coverdash head of partnerships Bobby Jones said, “Restaurant payroll can change significantly throughout the year, but Workers’ Compensation has traditionally been built around an annual estimate. By connecting coverage directly to 7shifts Payroll, we’re making it easier to get covered and keep premiums aligned with actual payroll.”
