CDP, the leading climate research provider and environmental disclosure platform, has unveiled Sherry Madera as its incoming CEO.
With a well-established background in public policy and sustainability, Madera is primed to steer the company through its next phase of growth and innovation.
Founded in 2000, CDP is committed to fostering transparency and accountability in environmental sustainability. The company operates a global disclosure system, facilitating investors and stakeholders to measure, track, and evaluate organisations’ performance in key areas like climate change, deforestation, and water security.
CDP’s reach has expanded significantly over the years, with data disclosure from over 18,700 companies in 2022, a 40% increase from the previous year, which roughly represents 50% of the global market capitalisation.
The incoming CEO, Sherry Madera, is highly respected within both the public policy and sustainability spheres. Madera, transitioning from her role as Senior Vice President of Public Policy at Mastercard, has demonstrated prowess in managing public policy and government affairs in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and China. Prior to Mastercard, she held the post of Chief Industry & Government Affairs Officer at LSEG, and is currently the Chair of The Future of Sustainable Data Alliance (FoSDA), working towards refining the data landscape for enhanced sustainability-focused capital deployment.
CDP founder and Chair, Paul Dickinson, expressed his delight at Madera’s appointment, endorsing her unique mix of skills as a key advantage for the future of CDP. Madera will succeed interim CEO Jamie Neil, who took over the reins when CDP co-founder and CEO Paul Simpson stepped down in 2022.
The official handover to Madera is slated for October, marking the commencement of a new chapter in the environmental leadership of CDP. In the words of Katherine Garrett-Cox, Chair of CDP Trustees, Madera’s experience and her steadfast belief in data as a key driver of climate action make her an ideal choice for leading CDP’s future growth.
Paul Dickinson, CDP Founder and Chair, said: “I’m delighted that Sherry will be joining CDP as CEO. Our work over the past 20 years means our data is now the bedrock of climate action, enabling companies, governments, and regulators worldwide to successfully set and meet climate commitments. Sherry has the perfect mix of skills to build on our success and lead CDP into a new era of environmental leadership at a critical time in the fight against climate change.”
Madera herself echoed this sentiment, saying: “I’m honoured to be joining CDP as data is recognised for its critical importance in measuring and managing climate actions. The scale of the climate and nature crises means CDP’s work is more urgent than ever. Without data we are blind in the fight against climate change and CDP’s pioneering role has become mainstream and essential to stakeholders including governments and regulators.”
