Mastercard and Zenith Bank have jointly launched the Essential Debit Card, a new solution aimed at widening consumer access to secure and affordable digital payments.
The introduction of this product comes as Nigeria’s digital economy experiences rapid expansion. According to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), electronic payment transactions climbed to ₦1.08 quadrillion in 2024, up from ₦600tn in 2023. With point-of-sale transactions also increasing 81% year-on-year to ₦19.4tn, demand for accessible financial tools has intensified among consumers and merchants. This growing momentum created a need for a more inclusive and scalable payment instrument.
Mastercard, known for its global payments infrastructure and commitment to digital financial inclusion, offers technology that supports secure and interoperable transactions across markets. Zenith Bank, with its extensive Nigerian footprint and position as a tier-one financial institution, brings nationwide reach and customer accessibility across both branch and digital channels.
The new Essential Debit Card has been designed to support everyday financial needs, especially for underserved and low-income populations who traditionally face barriers when entering the formal financial system. It provides an affordable way for individuals to begin their digital payments journey without the high costs or complexities associated with traditional banking products.
Customers can choose either a physical or virtual version of the card, enhancing flexibility depending on user preferences. Rollout began in July 2025 across Zenith Bank’s national network, enabled by simplified onboarding processes and lower issuance costs. As one of the first tier-one Nigerian banks to adopt Mastercard’s Essential Debit framework, Zenith Bank is working to expand its reach across high-potential but underserved segments.
By combining Mastercard’s trusted global technology with Zenith Bank’s market presence, the Essential Debit Card aims to support inclusive growth and encourage wider participation in Nigeria’s digital economy. The collaboration reflects a joint commitment to breaking barriers in everyday commerce and enabling more Nigerians to use secure, simple and affordable payment solutions.
Mastercard country manager and area business head for West Africa Folasade Femi-Lawal said, “At Mastercard, we believe that inclusion fuels innovation, and innovation must be inclusive by design. The Essential Debit Card offers a gateway to economic opportunity for millions. Through this collaboration with Zenith Bank, we are scaling impact by meeting people where they are, with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.”
Zenith Bank group managing director/chief executive Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, said, “This launch aligns with our ambition to drive financial inclusion at a larger scale. By offering an affordable, secure and practical digital payment solution, we’re empowering more Nigerians to participate in the formal economy, supporting not only individual progress but national economic growth. Together, we’re breaking barriers to everyday commerce and moving a step closer toward closing the financial inclusion gap in Nigeria.”
