Monzo launches UK's first cashback auto-invest card

Monzo, the digital bank known for its app-based current accounts, savings tools and lending products, has introduced Monzo Aura, a new credit card that automatically invests customers’ cashback every time they spend.

Set to begin rolling out to the first customers today, Aura lets cardholders earn uncapped cashback on their purchases, 1% on groceries and 0.5% on everything else, which is then automatically funnelled into fee-free Monzo Investments, a range of funds and exchange-traded funds. The bank said the feature is designed to make growing wealth as effortless as everyday spending, rather than something customers need to actively manage.

Alongside the investing feature, Aura holders receive a bundle of partner benefits the bank values at more than £360 annually, more than double the card’s yearly cost. These include an Apple TV subscription, a Google AI Plus plan with 2TB of cloud storage, two airport lounge passes and two fast-track security passes each year.

The card also comes with a credit limit of up to £15,000 and offers 0% interest over three months on purchases above £100, benefits the bank notes are ongoing rather than limited-time introductory offers. Aura carries a monthly fee of £15, or £180 a year.

Aura joins Monzo’s existing Flex Build and Flex Purchase credit cards, giving the bank a third card aimed at a different customer need: while Flex Build is designed to help customers build their credit history and Flex Purchase supports flexible everyday and larger spending, Aura is positioned around converting routine purchases into long-term investment contributions.

The fee-free Monzo Investments access extends beyond spending made on the Aura card itself, giving customers a route into ETFs tracking indices such as the FTSE 100, S&P 500 and Nasdaq, as well as gold and silver commodities.

An investment management fee is payable to BlackRock, which is deducted from the value of the investment rather than charged separately, while Monzo Pensions remain subject to the bank’s standard platform fee. The card is available to existing Monzo customers in the UK aged 18 and over, subject to credit profile, status and affordability checks, and carries a minimum term of three months.

Representative APR is 64.2% (variable) on a £1,200 credit limit, with a 29.0% variable yearly interest rate, and the bank cautions that missed payments could affect a customer’s credit score. Purchases between £100 and £30,000 may also be covered by Section 75 protection if goods turn out to be faulty or fail to arrive.

Monzo general manager, borrowing, Luke Enock said, “We know our customers really value products that deliver both immediate benefits and longer-term financial progress in one. For the first time, Aura combines fee-free auto-investing and cashback as you spend, so every purchase has the potential to do more. Aura turns each trip to the shop into investing for the future, whether that’s for a holiday, putting towards a first home or another money goal, all whilst adding value to people’s lives from today with a variety of partner perks.”
