Sumsub targets AI-driven fraud inside the workforce

Sumsub

Sumsub has introduced Workforce Verification, a solution built to embed document checks, biometric liveness detection and background screening directly into corporate identity and access management (IAM) and HR systems.

The launch targets a structural weakness in how large organisations authenticate staff. Conventional IAM platforms confirm that a user holds valid login credentials, such as a password or multi-factor authentication token, but stop short of confirming that the person behind those credentials is who they claim to be.

That distinction has become increasingly exploitable as credential theft, deepfakes and social engineering tactics grow more sophisticated, leaving multinational organisations exposed to unauthorised system access.

Industry research has sharpened the case for workforce-level identity checks. According to Gartner, help-desk account recovery is now the leading factor driving enterprise interest in workforce verification tools, with the firm forecasting that by 2026 some 30% of enterprises will no longer trust standalone facial biometric checks alone, given the rising sophistication of AI-generated spoofing attacks.

Sumsub’s fraud prevention infrastructure underpins the new offering, drawing on a network built from over 1.5bn enriched identities to support automated background screening alongside tailored document verification, allowing employers to validate a candidate’s employment history and credentials.

Workforce Verification is designed to function as an ongoing safeguard layered over an organisation’s existing technology stack rather than a replacement for it. A new hire’s government-issued ID is first checked during onboarding to set a verified baseline.

From that point, the system stays active throughout the employment lifecycle: when an IAM platform detects a high-risk event involving an existing staff member, such as a password reset, an escalation in access privileges or a login flagged as suspicious, Sumsub triggers an immediate step-up check that pairs biometric liveness detection with passive risk signals before access is restored.

Sumsub outlined four core advantages of the system. It removes reliance on easily compromised security questions during account recovery, replacing them with live biometric verification.

It is designed to block fraudulent candidates or contractors from reaching internal systems, sensitive data or intellectual property. It applies ongoing re-verification at high-risk moments across an employee’s tenure, rather than depending on a single check at the point of hire. And it is built to counter synthetic identity fraud, with Sumsub citing deepfake detection efficiency of up to 99.98%.

Sumsub chief product officer Andrew Novoselsky said, “IAM systems manage access, but a valid credential only proves possession, not identity. In an enterprise setting, a compromised employee account costs the keys to critical business operations. Workforce Verification plugs seamlessly into existing IAM and HR platforms to trigger live, deepfake-resistant checks at high-risk moments, stopping fraud without replacing existing infrastructure.”
