BDO Unibank modernises payments with Finastra platform

Finastra, the financial services software provider, has revealed that BDO Unibank, one of the largest universal banks in the Philippines, has upgraded its payments infrastructure using the Global PAYplus (GPP) platform.

The deployment is designed to help BDO manage rising transaction volumes, strengthen operational resilience and improve interoperability across the wider payments ecosystem. The bank has rolled out GPP’s high-value and mass-payments functionality, creating a scalable infrastructure for its existing and future payment requirements.

BDO now uses the platform for Swift and inbound PESONet processing, making it the largest commercial bank in the Philippines to adopt Global PAYplus.

The deployment introduces greater automation and configurable, rule-based payment processing, while supporting operational efficiency across the bank’s payments activity. It also gives BDO greater flexibility to respond to changing industry standards, including ISO 20022, and connect with new domestic and cross-border payment networks as they become available.

The move reflects a broader shift towards payment hubs that can bring multiple payment rails together through a single infrastructure layer. Finastra said cloud-native and API-enabled architecture, ISO 20022 compatibility and intelligent operations are increasingly becoming important components of payments infrastructure as banks look to improve efficiency and bring new services to market more quickly.

BDO serves retail, commercial and institutional customers across the Philippines with a range of banking and financial services. The bank also provides payment distribution capabilities into the Philippine market for correspondent banks and FinTech partners. Finastra develops software for financial services firms, with Global PAYplus serving as its payments processing platform for banks with complex requirements.

BDO head of cash management services Carlo B. Nazareno said, “Payments are a critical enabler of commerce and economic activity, making resilient and scalable infrastructure increasingly important. By enhancing our payments architecture with Finastra’s Global PAYplus, we have strengthened our ability to support growing transaction volumes, improve operational efficiency, and adapt to evolving market requirements. This provides a strong foundation for delivering a seamless client experience today while supporting future innovation across the payments ecosystem.”

Finastra chief product officer of payments Radha Suvarna added, “Banks around the world are under growing pressure to deliver payment experiences that are immediate, reliable, and tailored to increasingly diverse customer needs. By bringing high-value and mass-payments processing together on Global PAYplus, BDO is reducing complexity while creating a more flexible foundation for innovation. We are proud to support the bank as it advances its payments capabilities and expands the services it can provide to customers. Our partnership demonstrates both the international capabilities of our solution, as well as our commitment to supporting banks with complex requirements, including multiple clearing systems and nuanced corporate client needs.”
