Antler, the early-stage venture capital firm and startup generator that has supported several FinTech companies, has raised $50m in a new funding round.
Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is one of the backers. Other investors include the philanthropist Christen Sveeas, investment company Canica International and Credit Saison, the financial services firm, according to TechCrunch.
The money will be used for its funds in the Netherlands, the UK, the US, Sweden, Australia, Kenya and Singapore, where Saverin has been living since 2009.
Antler has previously supported cryptocurrency investment and lending platform Hodlnaut, financial planning FinTech company Mattrvest and SME cashflow organiser Quicka.
People outside of the tech scene may only remember Saverin from when he was portrayed by Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield in the Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 movie The Social Network about the early days of Facebook.
The movie and Saverin’s tenure at Facebook culminated with Mark Zuckerberg ousting his co-founder in 2005 by diluting Saverin’s stake in Facebook before kicking him out, according to an expose in Business Insider.
Saverin has kept busy since then. For instance, his VC firm B Capital raised over $400m in its second fund raise in April 2019. In 2011, he was also revealed to be one of online and mobile payment startup Jumio’s early backers, having put $6.5m of his own money into the business.
