President Joe Biden has claimed the US is more likely to end up in a ‘real shooting war with a major power’ due to cybercrime than any other form of conflict.
According to Cyberscoop, Biden made the comment during a speech at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s National Counterterrorism Center in Virginia.
He said, “We’ve seen how cyber threats, including ransomware attacks, increasingly are able to cause damage and disruption to the real world. And it’s increasing exponentially — the capabilities.
“I can’t guarantee this, and you’re as informed as I am, but I think it’s more likely we’re going to end up — well, if we end up in a war, a real shooting war with a major power, it’s going to be as a consequence of a cyber breach of great consequence.”
The words by the US President come at a time of great upheaval due to a hike in cyberattacks seen worldwide. A majority of these attacks have been ransomware hacks, with attacks on the Colonial Pipeline, JBS Foods, IT provider Kaseya and nuclear weapons contractor Sol Oriens some of the most noticeable.
The US government recently unveiled a new website – StopRansomware.gov – which is designed to provide businesses with greater knowledge of the threat posed by ransomware to their companies.
