43North’s $5m startup competition winners announced

Governor Kathy Hochul illuminated the dynamic arena of startup innovation through the announcement of the 9th annual 43North Finals in Buffalo, New York.

A whopping $5m was strategically allocated to support five groundbreaking companies, each being awarded a significant $1m investment.

Drawing competitors from diverse geographical locations, including as distant as London, this year’s competition spotlighted inventive solutions and products designed to ignite Western New York’s innovative economy. The event, held at Shea’s Performing Arts Center, witnessed vibrant pitches, offering a glimpse into prospective revolutionary approaches that could spearhead significant advancements in various sectors.

New York governor Kathy Hochul expressed her enthusiasm and commitment to pioneering innovation by stating, “New York is committed to spurring the growth of innovative and creative new startups, and the 43North competition is just one of the ways New York is working to find revolutionary solutions to today’s challenges.” The underlying theme was clear – enabling a new wave of entrepreneurs to carve out sustainable pathways in the innovation ecosystem, while concurrently boosting Buffalo’s economic dynamics by ushering in novel jobs and ideas.

The triumphing companies, namely Guidesly, KAV, Kredit Academy, Stepwise, and StoreCash, spanned an array of industries, from the $40bn outdoor recreational guide market, custom helmet manufacturing, financial literacy platforms, home electrification, to mobile payment solutions. With their relocation to Buffalo, these entities are not only anticipated to enrich the 43North incubator at Seneca One with vibrant ideas but also elevate Buffalo’s burgeoning innovative ecosystem through job creation and dynamic conceptual propositions.

The 2023 43North Competition outcomes were meticulously evaluated and concluded by a respected panel of Finals Judges: Sutian Dong, David Hall, Sandra Moore, Yancey Spruill, and Jenny Fielding. Their collective expertise and diverse perspectives have ensured that the selected winners possess the potential to significantly impact respective sectors and contribute meaningfully to Buffalo’s accelerating startup city reputation.

Complementing the $1m investment, each winner will also gain access to invaluable mentoring services, sector-specific expertise, office space, and interaction opportunities with an extensive network of investors. Over its nine-year trajectory, 43North has actively invested in a multifaceted industry portfolio of 64 companies. Notably, a commendable percentage of these ventures exhibit diverse leadership, with 46% having founders of colour and 26% featuring female founders. The accomplishments of 43North’s portfolio companies have, to date, materialised in the creation of over 1,100 jobs in Western New York.

43North has not only spotlighted startups but also demonstrated a commitment to continuity and sustainability in innovation. Chairman of 43North Mike Wisler proudly acknowledged, “In our 9th competition, the quality of companies and founders 43North is able to attract was on full display tonight. Congratulations to our five newest winners and welcome to Buffalo to take your companies to the next level!” His sentiments echoed the broader aspirations of the program – to fortify Buffalo’s position on the global startup map and to facilitate further advancements in diverse industrial domains.
