Hawk AI, a leading provider of fraud and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) surveillance technology, has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Maximilian Riege as Chief Risk Officer (CRO).
Riege’s role is to propel the Munich-based company’s global operations to greater heights, capitalising on the surge in demand that the firm has experienced in 2023 from banks and payment firms worldwide seeking AI-driven solutions to combat financial crime and manage compliance.
As the CRO he is set to leverage his extensive knowledge and expertise in governance, regulations, risk, and data security. His appointment underscores the company’s commitment to remaining a trusted partner in cloud-based enterprise AML and fraud detection.
Riege brings a wealth of senior management experience to his new role, having previously served as Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at Penta, a German digital business finance solution for SMEs. His responsibilities encompassed governance, regulatory functions, AML compliance, internal audits, and risk management, culminating in Penta’s acquisition by Qonto in 2022.
Prior to Penta, Riege held key positions, including Chief Representative and General Counsel at Verimi, a European identity platform backed by major corporations like Allianz, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, and others. His tenure at Hambach & Hambach as a Partner saw him advising prominent digital payment and financial service providers. Riege is admitted to the Bar in Germany and New York.
His appointment follows a series of significant hires at Hawk AI. Chris Caruana, previously with Feedzai, joined as Vice President of Strategy in August. In September, Thomas Fürst, founder of WebID, came aboard as SVP of Strategic Accounts, focusing on strategic business development plans.
Hawk AI specialises in aiding banks, payment companies, and fintechs combat financial crime through AML and fraud surveillance. Their explainable AI technology, backed by cloud-based solutions and a commitment to information sharing, enhances the efficiency of anti-financial crime teams.
Tobias Schweiger, CEO at Hawk AI, said, “Max is a big win for Hawk AI. With his outstanding knowledge and experience of governance, regulations, risk, and data security, he will ensure that we continue to be the trusted partner of choice for cloud-based enterprise AML and fraud detection. Banks and payment providers are looking for cutting-edge, explainable AI technology combined with organisational rigor that matches their own standards. That’s what Hawk AI provides.”
Maximilian Riege, Chief Risk Officer at Hawk AI, said, “I am thrilled to be joining Hawk AI. Financial crime continues to be a huge global problem affecting society on many levels. I’m proud to be part of a team that is transforming the fight against fraud and money-laundering and protecting citizens, businesses, and governments worldwide.”
