Google has agreed to settle a $5bn privacy lawsuit, stemming from allegations the tech giant tracked users’ internet activities even when they were in “incognito” mode in Chrome.
According to Security Week, this mode, along with similar privacy features in other browsers, was believed to offer users a level of anonymity, protecting them from being monitored online.
The lawsuit, initiated in 2020, accused Google of misleading users by implying that their internet activities would remain untracked while using incognito mode.
It highlighted that despite expectations of privacy, Google’s advertising technologies and various other methods were still able to collect detailed information on site visits and user activities.
The plaintiffs contended that this practice led to Google amassing an “unaccountable trove of information” about individuals who presumed they had taken measures to safeguard their privacy.
