Combined French banking app downloads increase 31% in 2023 YoY

Combined French banking app downloads reached a total of 73m downloads by the end of 2023, that’s 24% higher than Germany’s total banking app downloads.

Neobanks overtook incumbent banks in 2023 with neobanks’ downloads reaching 8.9m, a 5.7% increase over incumbent banks’ downloads.

Incumbent banks narrowly held on to the top spot for total combined downloads, as of 2024 with a 57% share of total downloads at 41.8m. This will likely reverse in 2024 as neobank growth and downloads were higher in 2023.

BoursoBank (BRS), a online bank created by Societe Generale, had the most download growth in 2023 with a 61% increase from 2022. Based on this growth, BoursoBank will is on track to be the most downloaded Frech banking app by the end of 2026. In France BRS is the market leader in online financial information through the www.boursorama.com portal and a key player in online banking under the Boursorama Bank brand.

Credit Agricole’s Ma Banque was the most downloaded baking app as of 1st Jan 2024 with s9.9m downloads. The bank has consistently been the most downloaded banking app in France over the past five years and saw a total of 2.1m downloads in 2023, a 26% increase from 2022. Ma Banque accounted for 13.5% of all the banking app downloads in France from as of 1st Jan 2024. Despite being the most downloaded French banking app, the app has very poor reviews with 2/5 star rating on Google’s play store. Ma Banque’s reviews are slightly better on Apple’s app store with a 3/5 star rating. Negative reviews mention the app not being intuitive, long loading times and new versions removing features. Positive reviews mention ok functionality and more features than other banking apps.
