Navigating the future of fund management

Aiviq, a prominent player in the FinTech sector, has launched into the new year with a strategic series of roundtable events, the latest of which took place at the Sofitel Kirchberg in Luxembourg.

On January 30th, this event was in collaboration with Alpha FMC’s Luxembourg Practice, spearheaded by Marc Marly, the Head of Compliance. The discussion brought together industry leaders from renowned firms such as Franklin Templeton, AllianceBernstein, Invesco EMEA, Capital Group, Schroders, Jupiter Asset Management, HSBC, and Columbia Threadneedle Investments EMEA APAC.

The central theme revolved around evolving expectations for distributor governance and oversight, particularly in light of the CSSF’s regulatory landscape.

The evolving landscape of distributor oversight

The dialogue was ignited by Marc Marly, who shared insights into the challenges faced by Managers in adapting to the CSSF Circular 18/698. This conversation set the stage for a deeper exploration into how firms are navigating these complexities to achieve a comprehensive understanding of global distribution arrangements. Rafal Kwasny of Franklin Templeton detailed their approach to integrating the Legg Mason acquisition, highlighting the strategic importance of strengthening governance and oversight to scale distributor onboarding and management processes effectively.

Innovations in distributor due diligence

The roundtable witnessed valuable contributions from Laurent Denayer, CEO of ume, who provided a nuanced overview of the evolution in distributor due diligence practices over the past seven years. His insights underscored the importance of targeted questioning in mitigating oversight and due-diligence risks, illustrating the blend of science and art required to elicit responses that meaningfully contribute to risk assessment models.

Challenges and solutions in managing distributor relationships

The complexity of managing commercial terms with distributors was a focal point of discussion, reflecting the industry-wide struggle to balance regulatory compliance with commercial objectives. Luke Tones, Aiviq’s Head of Product, demonstrated how their solution is addressing these challenges by creating a unified source for managing distribution agreements and related metrics, thus facilitating a more cohesive approach to distributor oversight.

Concluding thoughts on distributor oversight

The event concluded with reflections on the enduring challenge of achieving a holistic view of distributor relationships, underscoring the significance of integrating commercial, risk, and operational data to enhance the overall client experience. The roundtable not only offered invaluable insights into the current state and future direction of distributor oversight and regulatory compliance but also fostered a rich dialogue among participants, setting the stage for ongoing discussions in the field.
