Miscommunication between financial advisors and their clients can lead to misunderstandings that, while seemingly minor, have the potential to damage professional relationships significantly.

Recent research highlights that what financial advisors might dismiss as trivial missteps—be they verbal slips or lapses in clarity—can actually undermine client trust. This issue is compounded when considering the nuances of how fees are explained or the expectations set regarding the completion of tasks. Recognising these pitfalls is the first step toward mitigating their impact, thereby preserving and enhancing client relationships.

Morningstar Wealth, a provides financial advisers, investment managers, institutions, accountants and product providers with technology to manage or administer their investments globally, recently delved into the risks caused by communication errors.

The inevitability of miscommunication in client interactions is a stark reality, it said. Language, by its nature, is fraught with ambiguity, leading to multiple interpretations of the same statement. This problem is magnified by cognitive biases inherent to human nature. The “curse of knowledge,” for example, leads professionals to assume their own understanding of a subject is shared with the client. Furthermore, overconfidence in one’s ability to communicate effectively can lead to a false sense of security, overlooking the client’s need for clarity.

These cognitive biases manifest in several common errors. Advisors might omit crucial details, such as the timeframe for investment actions, assuming the client has the same knowledge base. Or, they might believe they’ve adequately explained fee structures in meetings, not realising the explanation lacked clarity for the client. Recognising these mistakes is crucial for advisors seeking to maintain strong client relationships.

However, all is not lost. Financial advisors can adopt several strategies to improve communication and reduce the frequency and impact of miscommunication. Practising clear and concise communication is essential. This involves simplifying complex financial jargon into understandable terms without being patronising. Creating standardised frameworks for written communications can also help structure information in a way that’s easier for clients to digest, such as using consistent subject lines in emails and providing summaries for more detailed messages.

Furthermore, actively seeking feedback through follow-up surveys or discussions can illuminate areas of misunderstanding, allowing advisors to address them directly. This proactive approach not only clarifies any confusion but also demonstrates the advisor’s commitment to the client’s understanding and satisfaction. By implementing these strategies, financial advisors can significantly reduce the likelihood and impact of miscommunication, fostering stronger, more trusting client relationships.
