IBM has announced the appointment of Christina Shim as its new Chief Sustainability Officer, according to an internal memo seen by ESG Today.

Shim will be taking over the role from current CSO and Vice President, Corporate Environmental Affairs & Product Safety, Wayne Balta, who is set to retire in June.

Shim, who joined IBM in 2021, has been instrumental in leading the company’s sustainability initiatives, particularly in the realm of sustainability software.

IBM is a multinational technology company that offers a range of hardware, software, and cloud-based services. It is committed to driving environmental sustainability through its operations and innovations. As the new Chief Sustainability Officer, Christina Shim will play a key role in advancing IBM’s environmental agenda and leveraging technology to address sustainability challenges.

Shim brings a wealth of experience to her new role as Chief Sustainability Officer at IBM. She has been serving as Global Head of Sustainability Software, leading IBM’s efforts in providing enterprise solutions that harness technologies such as AI, IoT, hybrid cloud, and blockchain to enable clients to achieve their sustainability goals. Prior to joining IBM, Shim held leadership positions at global impact firm Palladium and consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.

Wayne Balta, the outgoing CSO at IBM, has been with the company since 1984 and has played a pivotal role in driving IBM’s environmental leadership. He has received recognition for his contributions, including the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association for Environmental Management in 2018. Balta’s dedication to corporate environmental sustainability has earned him accolades, including being named a White House “Champion of Change” by President Obama in 2012.

Joanne Wright, Senior Vice President, Transformation and Operations at IBM, expressed confidence in Christina Shim’s ability to build on Wayne Balta’s legacy and advance IBM’s sustainability efforts. Wright highlighted IBM’s commitment to leveraging technology to drive efficiency, productivity, and a better employee and customer experience.

Shim expressed enthusiasm for her new role and reiterated IBM’s commitment to environmental sustainability. She emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to address climate-related risks and create industry solutions that promote resource conservation and reduce environmental impact.

Shim said, “I’m thrilled to take on this new challenge and keep driving forward IBM’s important environmental work leveraging the power of technology. IBM serves as client zero for many of the technologies it brings to market, leveraging our own solutions and innovations to make a lasting, positive impact through sustainability and in our business. From minimizing climate-related risks to creating and implementing industry solutions that harness the power of Artificial Intelligence and hybrid cloud, we will create more pathways to better conserve natural resources and reduce environmental impact.”
