The wealth management sector has seen a gradual adoption of generative AI (GenAI) and large language models (LLMs), particularly as firms look to enhance efficiency and client interactions.

A structured approach to AI adoption can enable firms to manage these risks effectively. Rather than abandoning LLMs, firms can integrate them with traditional financial models through an intermediary application layer. This synthesis allows financial firms to control and verify AI outputs while capitalising on the strengths of natural language processing technology.
One of the primary challenges with LLMs is their tendency to “hallucinate,” generating convincing but incorrect responses. This issue, coupled with the loss of context, can disrupt client experiences and harm a firm’s reputation. In wealth management, where precision is paramount, firms must ensure LLMs operate within a controlled framework.
An effective solution involves an application layer that acts as a gateway between the end-user and the LLM. By functioning as a mediator, the application interprets client requests, uses LLMs to generate insights, and ensures outputs are accurate and relevant. This approach mitigates the risks of direct interaction with LLMs while enhancing client experiences.
Maintaining a structured memory is equally critical. Financial planning tools should retain details about clients’ goals, risk profiles, and prior interactions. This structured memory allows the platform to validate AI-generated outputs against known data points, significantly reducing errors.
Moreover, leveraging retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques enhances output quality. By sourcing information from PDFs, websites, and dynamic databases, LLMs can provide contextually accurate and up-to-date responses. This ensures that client advice reflects the latest financial insights.
