Ending the false positives problem in AML

For more than two decades, financial institutions have been preoccupied with the challenge of reducing false positives in anti-money laundering (AML) processes. But this long-standing fixation may soon be redundant.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming how alerts are handled, making false positives no longer a pressing concern, claims Workfusion.

Traditionally, AML teams have been told that minimising false positives is a core priority. Countless products in the compliance space have marketed themselves on their ability to reduce the number of alerts generated by screening and monitoring systems. However, this thinking has trapped the industry in outdated methods that are both costly and ineffective. The real breakthrough lies in AI, which can now handle alerts at scale and speed that human teams cannot match.

Rather than reducing the number of alerts, AI changes the equation entirely by automating their resolution. Using reasoning models that mirror human steps, AI can process sanction, watchlist, politically exposed person (PEP), and adverse media alerts in seconds. It either closes them automatically or escalates them for human review, removing the backlog problem that has haunted compliance teams for years.

False positives arise from the two main functions of AML operations: screening and monitoring. Screening is particularly problematic. More than 90% of alerts generated from sanctions and watchlist checks are not errors but the intended result of systems casting a wide net to avoid missing a true match. Because names alone are poor unique identifiers, alerts pile up endlessly. Attempts to refine these systems further have proven futile and risk missing real cases.

This is where AI technologies step in. Machine learning spots patterns across data. Natural language processing helps machines read both structured databases and unstructured information such as news articles. Intelligent document processing extracts and interprets details from IDs and documents. Generative AI and large language models (LLMs) classify and create content, while AI agents solve complex problems across multiple steps. Together, these tools replicate the work of human analysts with greater accuracy and speed.

The real cost of false positives has always been in the human labour required to review them. Compliance teams face high turnover, monotonous workloads, and the ever-present danger of mistakes. Backlogs not only inflate operational costs but also create regulatory risk, as deadlines for suspicious activity reporting are missed. With AI capable of conducting reviews in nanoseconds and consistently applying the same decision-making process every time, these challenges are disappearing.

In practice, AI replicates every step of an analyst’s review, from comparing names and locations to assessing supporting documents and recording the outcome. The difference is that AI does it instantly, providing a clear audit trail and allowing institutions to ingest more contextual data without slowing operations. This is just as relevant in adverse media screening, where AI can instantly review dozens of articles to determine relevance, as it is in transaction monitoring and enhanced due diligence, which have traditionally consumed enormous resources.

The paradigm shift is that compliance teams no longer need to focus on reducing false positives. Instead, they can resolve every alert quickly and precisely. AI has turned what was once an intractable bottleneck into a manageable and efficient process, freeing up AML professionals to focus on higher-value tasks and emerging risks.

The promise of AI in AML is not theoretical. It is already here, redefining compliance operations. The long struggle against false positives may finally be at an end.
