Commerzbank, a major German bank, has announced a strategic collaboration with Hawk, a leading provider of AI-powered anti-fraud and AML technology, to strengthen its defences against financial crime through artificial intelligence.
The partnership centres on the deployment of Hawk’s “AML AI Extended Risk Model”, which supplements Commerzbank’s existing rule-based compliance infrastructure rather than replacing it.
The solution connects to legacy systems via a dedicated integration layer, removing the need for lengthy technology overhauls.
Since going live, the implementation has delivered measurable results, with the bank reporting improved alert accuracy, fewer false positives, a greater number of novel money laundering and fraud cases identified, and enhanced AI model governance across its software validation processes.
Hawk works with banks and payment providers around the world, offering a platform that blends conventional rule-based detection with explainable AI. The company positions its technology as a way for financial institutions to catch more criminal activity while cutting down on the operational burden created by high volumes of false positive alerts.
Commerzbank Cluster Lead Global Financial Crime Prevention Platform Viktor Kraus said, “Given the complexity of the landscape, we can only successfully combat financial crime with the help of AI. It is a high strategic priority for us to proactively and continuously expand our compliance system architecture.”
Hawk CEO Tobias Schweiger said, “Banks must adapt to new threat scenarios in money laundering. Our AI-driven solution helps achieve this.”
Schweiger added, “Our software enables compliance teams to improve the quality and transparency of money laundering detection and investigations. In this context, the explainable nature of our AI plays a central role – particularly regarding regulatory approval.”
Commerzbank group chief compliance officer Hans-Georg Beyer said, “Commerzbank is using its position as a pioneer to conduct its fight against money laundering in an even more targeted manner. The collaboration with Hawk is a vital step in this direction.”
