Daon wins third patent for agentic AI governance

Daon, the Digital Identity Trust Company, has been granted a new patent aimed at tackling one of the toughest production hurdles facing agentic AI within regulated sectors.

The newly granted patent, titled “Methods and Systems for Authorizing Invocation of a Tool by an Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Agent,” gives organisations the ability to control whether a particular AI agent is permitted to carry out a particular action against a guarded tool, service, account, or API.

The US Patent and Trademark Office issued the patent on 21 July 2026, marking the third in a run of filings from Daon focused on securing and governing autonomous agents. Combined, the trio of patents cover the bond between a person and their agent, the reliability of an agent’s conduct, and the sign-off needed for individual actions an agent takes.

Under the mechanics of the newly issued patent, an authorisation checkpoint weighs up a request from an agent by examining its continuing connection to the person it is acting for, the soundness of its execution behaviour, and the circumstances surrounding the requested action.

Once these criteria are met, the system issues what is described as a “digital permission slip,” a mechanism that sets boundaries on the agent’s activity by specifying an approved action type, a defined scope, and a time restriction. The granted claims extend to brief authorisation windows, restricted delegation tools, caps on rate and transaction volume, binding actions to their execution context, evidence drawn from attestation, and protection against replay within a session.

Daon CEO Tom Grissen said, “Agentic AI is unlikely to safely move from experimentation into high-value production environments on intelligence alone. It requires identity, policy, containment, and evidence at the moment an agent attempts to act. This patent strengthens Daon’s ability to help enterprises move beyond the false choice between blocking autonomous agents and granting them broad standing authority.”
