Carpe, a company specialising in AI-native data solutions for the insurance sector, has introduced the Minerva Reasoning Engine, a tool built to help small commercial insurers underwrite more profitably.
The new solution is designed to translate a carrier’s appetite for small commercial risk into evidence-based recommendations, guiding underwriters towards a quote, decline, or referral outcome. It does this by drawing on live business intelligence and converting each carrier’s specific risk preferences into named, testable rules that can be applied consistently.
Small commercial underwriters have long grappled with balancing the resources needed to research a prospective policyholder against the profit that policy might generate. Getting this balance right calls for both speed and accuracy, yet many carriers remain held back by manual research processes, fragmented data sources, and appetite rules that are applied inconsistently across teams.
Minerva addresses this by combining several steps into a single workflow: it identifies the business in question, builds out its profile with additional data, applies the carrier’s own appetite rules against current intelligence from Carpe, and produces a reasoning path supported by clear evidence. This allows carriers to use the same underwriting logic regardless of submission source or distribution channel, while still leaving underwriters free to apply their own judgement to more complex risks.
Among the benefits Carpe highlights for the platform are a reduction of up to 25% in underwriting touchpoints, thanks to automated handling of straightforward risks, and time savings of between 30 and 45 minutes per submission by removing the need for manual research.
The tool can also assess more than 200 characteristics of a business to determine whether it matches a carrier’s growth objectives, and it can be configured across a database of over 50 million US business profiles, with appetite adjustments made using plain-language instructions.
The Minerva Reasoning Engine is now available to commercial carriers.
Carpe chief executive officer Max Drucker said, “Carriers need better decisions from the data already available to them. We’ve spent more than a decade building exceptional commercial intelligence, and the Minerva Reasoning Engine gives carriers the reasoning they need to expand capacity while keeping underwriting judgment focused on the risks that deserve it. That creates room to grow the book with greater control over both loss and expense performance.”
