Aviva and Cardinus launch AI tool for workplace safety

Aviva Global Risk Management Solutions, the risk consultancy arm of UK insurer Aviva, has introduced an AI-powered motion analysis service aimed at helping employers spot musculoskeletal risks before they develop into injuries.

The new offering gives Aviva’s risk management clients access to 3MotionAi, an advanced AI motion analysis platform created in partnership with health, safety and ergonomics specialist Cardinus Risk Management. Originally designed for sports performance, the technology has since been adapted to identify and manage musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) within workplace settings.

Musculoskeletal disorders continue to represent one of the UK’s most significant occupational health challenges, it said. According to Health and Safety Executive figures, 511,000 workers were affected by work-related MSDs in 2024/25, a total that includes both new and long-standing cases, contributing to 7.1 million lost working days.

The service equips Aviva’s Risk Management Solutions Consultants with new capabilities to examine how tasks are carried out and where employees may be at risk of strain or injury. Drawing on video footage, 3MotionAi evaluates posture, movement, repetition, force and duration, uncovering hazards that traditional assessment methods can sometimes overlook.

The aim is to give organisations real-time, evidence-based insight so they can direct their resources towards the areas of greatest risk.

Gill Milner, Head of Risk Management Solutions, Casualty Classes, at Aviva, said, “Many musculoskeletal risks aren’t immediately obvious. In our pilots we’ve already seen 3Motion identify higher-risk activities that had previously been considered low risk, helping clients take targeted action before injuries occur.

“By delivering real-time, evidence-based insights into workplace activities, the technology helps organisations focus their efforts where they’ll have the greatest impact, supporting safer workplaces, healthier employees and stronger business performance.”

Jon Abbott, Director at Cardinus Risk Management, said, “We’ve been delighted to build on our long-standing relationship with Aviva to harness the power of AI in helping organisations keep their people healthy, safe and in work. By combining Cardinus’ expertise in ergonomics and workplace health with Aviva’s commitment to supporting customers, we’ve developed an intelligent solution that identifies musculoskeletal risks earlier, enabling timely interventions before they become more serious. Ultimately, this is about preventing avoidable injuries, reducing their impact on individuals and organisations, and helping people remain healthy, productive and in work.”
