Australia’s federal administration overseeing national economic and regulatory policy has unveiled a Financial Innovation Strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s financial system while safeguarding consumer and business trust.
The strategy, published today, will establish a Financial Innovation Committee designed to sit alongside existing coordination structures and drive a joined-up approach to innovation across government departments and regulatory bodies.
Alongside the new committee, the government is overhauling its Enhanced Regulatory Sandbox framework. The move follows a review of the sandbox that concluded the current setup has fallen short of the flexibility and uptake that industry participants require.
Under the existing sandbox arrangement, firms can trial new financial products and services under supervised conditions, giving regulators first-hand exposure to emerging technologies, the obstacles they present, and the policy responses they may eventually demand.
The government intends to replace this model with a more adaptable version, with a particular focus on smoothing the transition from pilot testing through to full market adoption.
As part of the redesign, regulators are expected to explore the creation of targeted sandboxes in select priority areas, including AI-enabled financial services and digital financial market infrastructure.
The government frames the broader initiative as building on an already strong foundation. It describes Australia’s financial system as one of the country’s core economic strengths, and positions the new strategy as a way of sharpening the sector’s competitiveness on the global stage without compromising the confidence that underpins it.
Genuine innovation, the release stresses, extends beyond simply adopting new technology; it also depends on fresh products, services, business models and operating practices that produce better outcomes for consumers, companies and the economy as a whole. Achieving that, it notes, will rely on sustained coordination between government, regulators and industry, guided by a clear strategic direction.
