GRI has launched its new Sustainability Taxonomy, a digital tool designed to modernise sustainability reporting by making GRI disclosures machine-readable using XBRL, the global language for business reporting.
The taxonomy enables organisations to structure and share sustainability data in a digital format aligned with all GRI Standards—Universal, Sector, and Topic. It supports direct or online submissions, offering flexibility regardless of a reporter’s size or technical capabilities.
GRI’s taxonomy has been developed to align with XBRL-based frameworks from the ISSB and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), enhancing global compatibility and meeting evolving regulatory demands.
XBRL International CEO John Turner welcomed the new release, stating, “We welcome GRI’s new Sustainability Taxonomy, which marks an important advancement for digital sustainability reporting. By applying our XBRL language, GRI reporting can be structured in a fully digital way that ensures data can be effectively presented, analyzed, shared and compared. This Taxonomy increases the trustworthiness and accessibility of information disclosed using the GRI Standards and is a milestone we are proud to support.”
GRI chief engagement officer Cristina Gil White emphasised the importance of this step in democratising digital ESG data: “GRI’s Sustainability Taxonomy is a significant step forward in making sustainability information faster to retrieve and analyze, for both reporting organizations and data users.”
Looking ahead, GRI will release verification tools in late 2025 to help reporters ensure consistency with GRI Standards.
