Quantifind tech aids wildlife crime investigation

Illegal wildlife trafficking, estimated to be worth around $20bn annually, remains one of the world’s most lucrative black markets.

Traffickers increasingly exploit digital platforms and complex global supply chains to transport endangered species across borders with minimal oversight. However, advanced technologies are now giving investigators an edge in dismantling these illegal operations, claims Quantifind.

Earlier this year, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) launched a large-scale investigation into online wildlife trafficking networks. To bolster their efforts, the organisation integrated Quantifind’s AI-powered risk intelligence platform, a tool designed to analyse vast data sources and uncover high-risk actors. This decision proved pivotal in advancing the investigation.

By June 2025, the IFAW team had identified a trafficking network operating in the Middle East with links to Central Africa, a hotspot for the illegal live pet trade. One individual, referred to as Marcel, was already known from previous open-source investigations into bird trafficking, including the endangered African Grey Parrot. Investigators had his name and two companies reportedly tied to him but lacked enough evidence to proceed further.

Quantifind’s technology soon changed that. The platform was used to search for variations of Marcel’s name and the companies in question. Within moments, the AI revealed that the businesses appeared fraudulent or entirely fabricated—a tactic commonly employed by traffickers to appear legitimate. Even more significantly, African media reports linked Marcel to recent trafficking probes and disclosed a conviction that had previously escaped investigators’ attention.

This breakthrough enabled IFAW to alert international partners and widen the investigation. Quantifind’s tools—ranging from risk scoring to name-variant detection and access to obscure media sources—allowed investigators to act with speed and confidence.

Although the case remains ongoing and sensitive information cannot be shared, this example demonstrates how AI can help organisations fighting organised crime make rapid, evidence-based decisions. By providing actionable intelligence, technology like Quantifind’s supports efforts to protect endangered wildlife and disrupt illegal networks worldwide.
