Upwind has raised $250m in a Series B funding round, propelling the company to unicorn status just two years after it emerged from stealth.
The new investment takes Upwind’s total funding to date beyond $430m, a figure that places the company among the most heavily capitalised businesses tackling cloud security challenges.
The milestone marks what the firm describes as the first instance of a unicorn valuation being reached in the modern cloud security space, a distinction it frames as validation of demand for its approach rather than an end point.
The Series B round was backed by Bessemer Venture Partners, whose team included Elliott Robinson, Sameer Dholakia and Alex Yuditski, alongside Picture Capital.
Upwind’s earlier funding history includes a Series A round supported by Craft, led by Mike Robinson and David Sacks, while its seed backers included Cyberstarts founder Gili Raanan, Greylock’s Saam Motamedi, Gideon Hayden of Leaders Fund, Bryant Barr of Penny Jar Capital, and NBA star Stephen Curry, who joined as an early supporter of the business.
Upwind builds a cloud security platform designed to address the growing complexity of modern cloud infrastructure, where rising data volumes and the accelerating adoption of artificial intelligence have outpaced traditional, static security models.
The company positions its technology as one built for continuous change and real-world complexity, rather than the simplified assumptions underpinning legacy approaches, and it intends to extend this coverage across AI, data and code as its platform develops.
The company’s founding traces back to a chance conversation during a family trip, when co-founder Omri Casspi introduced the idea to early backers who moved quickly to support it, setting in motion a pattern of fast-moving, conviction-led investment that has continued through each subsequent funding round.
Upwind has described the seed-stage support it received, particularly from Cyberstarts and Greylock, as built around close engagement with technical leaders and iterative feedback, an approach it says shaped how the business developed in its earliest stages.
With the new capital, Upwind plans to increase its pace of growth, expand investment in its platform, and scale support for customers operating in increasingly complex cloud environments, while continuing to broaden its coverage across AI, data and code security.
