The European Union is set to activate an EU cyber response team to help Ukraine as the country faces the threat of a war with Russia.
According to Security Week, the leader of the unit – Lithuania – said that it and other countries are activating the Cyber Rapid Response Team to help Ukrainian institutions cope with growing cyber threats.
This decision comes a few days after President Putin recognised the independence of Luhansk and Donetsk, fuelling a backlash from a host of Western countries and stoking fears of a potential invasion of the sovereign Ukraine.
Dmytro Kuleba – Ukrainian foreign minister – said Russia had been using hybrid tactics to escalate the situation.
He said, “We see disinformation campaigns, we see cyberattacks. We see open fakes distributed about Ukraine, and we see increased military activity.” Kuleba also called the EU to take decisions that would ‘send clear messages to Russia that its escalation will not be tolerated and Ukraine will not be left on its own.’
He added, “This includes not only political messaging, political signals, but also some very specific acts like supporting the development of our defence sector, supporting Ukraine’s cybersecurity, imposing some of the sanctions.”
