Fingerprint Cards, Morix team to introduce biometric payment card in Japan

Swedish biometrics specialist Fingerprint Cards has partnered with Japanese electronics firm MoriX to develop and launch biometric payment cards in the Japanese market.

Founded in 1997, Fingerprint claims its technology consists of biometric sensors, processors, modules, software and algorithms that can be used separately or in combination with each other, in a wide variety of use cases – including mobile and enterprise security to payments and smart homes.

According to Fingerprint, the new card will feature Fingerprints T-Shape module, which the company states has ultra-low power consumption and is tailored to be integrated in payment cards using standard automated manufacturing processes.

Fingerprint highlighted that there is a ‘growing preference for card transactions among Japanese consumers’ who are choosing touch-free and safe and seamless ways to pay.

Through the addition of biometrics to the contactless payment card, this will bolster security and make it possible for Fingerprint to remove the ¥20,000 payment cap as well as enabling hygienic and undisturbed contactless payments for all transactions.

Fingerprints SVP for business line payments and access Michel Roig said, “We are pleased to partner with MoriX, being a leading innovator in Japan. This collaboration will bring consumers in Japan a more secure, safe and easy payment experience.”

MoriX business planning chief Akio Nishimura added, “We selected the biometric solution from Fingerprints since they have the leading technology in the market for contactless biometric payments, with proven performance and the lowest power consumption.”
