The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the regulator and supervisor for the EU’s financial markets, is currently on the lookout for new members to join its Securities Markets Stakeholder Group (SMSG).
The SMSG plays a crucial role within ESMA, serving as a conduit for stakeholder consultation. It assists in delivering technical advice on the authority’s policies and activities and offers insights into recent market developments. This mechanism ensures that ESMA’s regulatory framework remains responsive and informed by a wide range of perspectives.
Verena Ross, the Chair of ESMA, lauded the contributions of the outgoing SMSG members, acknowledging their delivery of high-quality advice that has significantly supported ESMA’s mission. “The outgoing SMSG has provided invaluable support to ESMA through high-quality advice, and I would like to thank all the members for their work,”
Ross remarked.
She highlighted the importance of a balanced representation of stakeholder views within the SMSG, particularly emphasizing the need for voices from consumers, users of financial services, financial sector employees, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Ross’s call for participation is an invitation to these stakeholders to contribute their insights and advice, thereby influencing the evolution of European capital markets.
Candidates interested in joining the SMSG are encouraged to submit their applications by the deadline of 23.59 CET on 18 March 2024. All necessary details for application submission are available on ESMA’s official website. The selection process will culminate with ESMA’s Board of Supervisors making the final decision on the SMSG’s composition in May 2024. The appointed members will commence their four-year term on 1 July 2024.
In parallel, the European Banking Authority (EBA) and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) are set to issue calls for candidates for their respective stakeholder groups within the first quarter of 2024.
