Frontier AI security lab Irregular raises $80m funding

Irregular

Irregular, the world’s first frontier AI security lab, has announced it has raised $80m to set new standards in securing advanced artificial intelligence.

The round was led by Sequoia Capital and Redpoint Ventures, with additional backing from Swish Ventures. Notable angel investors also took part, including Wiz CEO Assaf Rappaport and Eon CEO Ofir Ehrlich.

Formerly known as Pattern Labs, Irregular works alongside leading AI labs including OpenAI and Anthropic to assess how next-generation AI systems could pose real-world threats. These include antivirus evasions and autonomous offensive actions, with the aim of creating defences before models are publicly deployed.

The company specialises in running controlled simulations on cutting-edge AI models, testing their potential misuse in cyber operations and their resilience against targeted attacks. This approach gives AI developers and deployers a secure way to identify vulnerabilities early and build in safeguards.

Funding will support Irregular’s mission of shaping global AI security standards, with its evaluations already influencing leading organisations. Its work has been cited in OpenAI’s system cards for GPT-4 o3, o4 mini and GPT-5, as well as used by the UK government and Anthropic through the SOLVE framework to assess cyber risks. Google DeepMind researchers have also referenced its expertise, while the firm has co-authored influential papers with Anthropic and RAND on AI security, privacy, and model misuse.

Irregular CEO Dan Lahav said, “Irregular has taken on an ambitious mission to make sure the future of AI is secure as it is powerful. AI capabilities are advancing at breakneck speed; we’re building the tools to test the most advanced systems way before public release, and to create the mitigations that will shape how AI is deployed responsibly at scale.”

Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire said, “The real AI security threats haven’t emerged yet. What stood out about the Irregular team is how far ahead they’re thinking. They’re working with the most advanced models being built today and laying the groundwork for how we’ll need to make AI reliable in the years ahead.”

The company has already reached millions in annual revenue and continues to collaborate with some of the world’s most influential AI research organisations to strengthen security across the sector.
