Stash taps Capitalize to tackle forgotten 401(k) savings

Stash is embedding Capitalize’s rollover technology into its app, giving eligible US customers a way to locate and consolidate old 401(k) accounts without leaving the platform.

The partnership will allow customers to search for former workplace retirement accounts, initiate rollover requests and receive support throughout the transfer process. The feature is available to eligible US customers from 19 August, with Capitalize’s Embedded Rollover API integrated directly into the Stash platform.

The move targets a longstanding problem in the US retirement market, where workers can leave 401(k) savings behind when they change jobs rather than transferring the funds into a new employer plan or Individual Retirement Account (IRA). For consumers, this can leave retirement savings spread across multiple accounts and providers, making assets more difficult to track and manage.

By bringing the rollover process into an existing investment platform, Stash is attempting to remove some of the administrative friction associated with consolidating retirement savings.

Stash CEO Brandon Krieg said, “Too many Americans leave retirement savings behind when they change jobs because rolling over an old 401(k) is harder than it should be. We’re building Stash to be the financial advisor for everyone, so our job is to make the next right move feel obvious and easy.”

The partnership also comes as younger generations show increasing engagement with retirement planning. A May 2024 report from Goldman Sachs Asset Management found that 60% of Gen Z and 67% of Millennials said they already had a personalised retirement plan. Meanwhile, 68% of Gen Z and 69% of Millennials said they believed their retirement savings were on track or ahead of schedule.

While having a retirement plan does not necessarily translate into consolidated accounts, the figures highlight the growing focus among younger consumers on managing their long-term finances.

Stash is a registered investment advisor and broker-dealer regulated by the SEC and FINRA. The company offers investing, banking, retirement planning and financial education through a subscription-based platform and says it has more than one million subscribers and over $5bn in assets under management.

Capitalize provides technology for locating and transferring retirement accounts, with its platform supporting financial institutions and advisors with rollover functionality.

Its Embedded Rollover API allows financial services providers to integrate retirement account transfers into their own customer experiences rather than directing users to a separate rollover process.

Capitalize CEO Gaurav Sharma added, “Stash has built a powerful platform that makes building wealth and investing more accessible, intuitive, and engaging for everyday Americans. Through this partnership, Stash customers will have a simpler way to transfer and consolidate their retirement savings, helping reduce the friction that too often causes people to leave valuable assets behind when they change jobs. Together, Stash and Capitalize are making it easier for more Americans to take control of their retirement future.”

The partnership highlights a broader shift in WealthTech towards embedding traditionally fragmented financial services into existing digital platforms. For retirement providers, the opportunity is not only to help consumers invest more, but also to make it easier for them to find, transfer and manage assets accumulated throughout their working lives.
