The Bank of Ireland has announced the appointment of Akshaya Bhargava as its new Chair and Governor.

Set to take up his role on January 1, 2025, Bhargava will succeed Patrick Kennedy, who has held the position since 2018. This leadership transition follows a comprehensive international search.

Bank of Ireland Group is a significant player in the banking industry, noted for its comprehensive range of banking services and its strategic focus on enhancing customer experience and financial innovation.

Akshaya Bhargava, the newly appointed Chair, is well-recognized for his extensive experience within the financial services ecosystem. His previous roles include CEO of Global Wealth and Investment Management at Barclays and founder of several successful FinTech companies. Bhargava has been a board member of Bank of Ireland Group since January of this year and has a rich history of leadership positions, including executive roles at Wealthify Group, Mindtree, and Barclays Asset Management.

In addition to his role at Bank of Ireland, Bhargava has a commendable track record spanning over two decades at Citibank, and entrepreneurial ventures such as founding Infosys BPO Ltd and Bridgeweave, a FinTech firm.

Richard Goulding, Senior Independent Director and Deputy Chair of Bank of Ireland, praised Bhargava’s qualifications, noting his blend of financial expertise and leadership acumen. “These qualities will be of great benefit to Bank of Ireland, as it works to complete its current strategic cycle and looks to the years ahead in what is a fast-evolving sector,” Goulding added.
