Bulgaria’s National Revenue Agency said to be appealing fine for data breach

Bulgaria’s National Revenue Agency (NRA) is reportedly set to appeal the 5.1m levs ($2.8m) fine it received following a widespread data breach.

It hopes to get the penalty revoked on the basis the data theft happened despite the data-protection measures it has in place, according to a report from Reuters. The fine was implemented by the country’s National Data Protection Authority.

In July, hackers were able to breach the NRA and access personal data of five million citizens – Bulgaria has a total population of around seven million. Information stolen included addresses and income.

The fine has been imposed by the country’s data protection regulator as a means to ensure future breaches are prevented, not as a punishment, the article claims.

In addition to appealing the fine, the NRA is allegedly looking to take legal action against the hackers and have them pay the fine in instead.
