Russia launches huge cyberattack against Montenegro

Russia

The security agency of Montenegro has said that hackers from Russia have launched a ‘massive, coordinated’ cyberattack against its government and its services.

According to Security Week, the Agency for National Security (ANB) said Montenegro is ‘under a hybrid war at the moment’.

For acting against the interests of Russia, the country has added Montenegro to its list of ‘enemy states’ which comprises the majority of European countries.

The Montenegrin government recently reported the first in a series of cyberattacks on its servers, but said it managed to avoid any damage. However, the attack appears to be ongoing.

ANB said, “Coordinated Russian services are behind the cyber attack. This kind of attack was carried out for the first time in Montenegro and it has been prepared for a long period of time.”

Government official Dusan Polovic said, “I can say with certainty that this attack that Montenegro is experiencing these days comes directly from Russia.”

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Montenegro warned its citizens to be aware of a persistent and ongoing cyberattack that is in process.

The Embassy said, “The attack may include disruptions to the public utility, transportation (including border crossings and airport), and telecommunication sectors.”

Spain’s leading scientific research center was recently targeted by a cyberattack that has origin links to Russia.

According to Security Week, the Spanish science ministry said the Spanish National Research Council was targeted by a ransomware attack on July 16 and 17.

A preliminary analysis by the Spanish cybersecurity authorities said that it appears that no sensitive or confidential information was extracted.
