Travelex’s offerings are finally back online after almost a months’ outage caused by a ransomware attack

Travelex’s foreign exchange services were crippled on New Year’s Eve when the company discovered a ransomware in its system.

Almost a month later, Travelex has now announced that it is fully operational.

However, despite Travelex saying that it would open its automated order placement service used by retailers, several of them were still offline when Reuters checked.

The attack, which force the personnel to calculate foreign currency exchanges with pen and paper, wreaked havoc during the holidays as people travelling were left unable to use the services.

Travelex has revealed that Sodinokibi, also known as REvil, was the malware used in the attack.

The malware also hurt the services of its partners, such as Samsung Pay, who were forced to shut down their collaboration with Travelex out of fear of spreading the virus.

The news comes about a week after Travelex first announced that it would be reopening some of its services.
