Over two fifths of health insurers still lack a consumer facing app

Only 42% of health insurers in Europe have a consumer facing app, despite the rising importance of digitalisation, according to a new whitepaper from Scanbot.

The whitepaper, which can be downloaded for free here, captures the current status of European health insurance. Scanbot has completed an in-depth analysis of digital initiatives in European health insurance companies in 24 European states.

Its research claims that just over 40% of insurers have adopted a digital app for their insurance services. Croatia has the highest adoption rate of European states, sitting at 100%. This is due to The Croatian Health Insurance Fund being the only purchaser of health services and offers a mobile app.

The other countries to have adoption rates above 70% are Slovakia, Sweden, Spain and the Netherlands. Adoption across the DACH-region is 55.9%.

Data from Statista estimates there are around 400 million mobile phone users in Europe, and having an app is a good way for insurers to reach more customers. The Covid-19 pandemic has only accelerated this, with people being forced online. This has left the digitalisation strategies of insurance firms critical for survival.

If companies want to survive in the coming year, more will have to adopt mobile apps.

Scanbot has provided a full breakdown of Europe and how insurers in the region are handling digitalisation.
