Blackbaud backs Momentum to revolutionise fundraising with AI

Blackbaud, the preeminent software provider for the social impact sector, today unveiled a significant investment in Momentum, an innovative AI startup.

Momentum, known for its pioneering use of artificial intelligence in fundraising, is a distinguished Blackbaud partner and a notable graduate of Blackbaud’s Social Good Startup tech accelerator program.

The investment forms part of Blackbaud’s broader Intelligence for Good® initiative, aiming to enhance the AI-enabled solutions available on the Blackbaud Marketplace. This strategic move is set to accelerate product delivery and embed advanced AI capabilities within Blackbaud’s offerings. A key aspect of this partnership is Momentum’s integration with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT®, which promises to revolutionize fundraising and stewardship processes for Blackbaud customers.

Blackbaud is a software provider serving nonprofit and education sectors. Its solution helps accelerate the impact in fundraising and support nonprofit accounting.

Momentum, established by a team of behavioural scientists from Duke’s Center for Advanced Hindsight, launched its first solution in 2019. The firm has quickly made its mark by developing AI-driven tools that foster enduring connections between impactful charities and their benefactors.

This latest funding will be directed towards enhancing Momentum’s platform, which leverages automation and generative AI to streamline donor communication. The platform has already demonstrated its value, with users reporting a 400% increase in personalised interactions and an impressive monthly boost of $60,000 in donations.

Founded with a vision to alleviate the psychological strain on fundraisers by fostering more meaningful donor relationships, Momentum’s collaboration with Blackbaud is poised to set new benchmarks in the social good sector.

Blackbaud president and CEO, Mike Gianoni, highlighted the transformative potential of AI in the social impact arena. “A tremendous opportunity exists for social impact organizations to use AI to address key operational and financial challenges. Blackbaud is actively investing in organic analytics and AI capabilities, and partnering with leading AI companies such as Momentum, to enable our customers to reach donors at a scale never seen before.”

Echoing this sentiment, Momentum founder and CEO, Nick Fitz, expressed gratitude for Blackbaud’s support. “Blackbaud’s tech accelerator has been a pleasure to be a part of. With their help, we’ve refined our AI capabilities and integrated core infrastructure. We’re working directly with fundraisers—helping people build more meaningful relationships with less psychological burden—and we’re excited to learn from the leader in the space. This investment, and guidance from Blackbaud, will help us better serve the people powering the social good sector.”
