Splitwise has expanded its Pay by Bank feature to France, Germany, and Austria through an extended partnership with Tink, a Visa Solution.
The move builds on strong momentum from the UK, where Splitwise has recorded a 150% surge in Tink account checks and payment initiations this year.
The collaboration enables users across the three new markets to send money to friends and family directly within the Splitwise app, offering instant and secure payments.
The expansion arrives amid a global surge in open banking adoption. According to Juniper Research, the number of open banking users worldwide is projected to climb from 183 million in 2025 to more than 645 million by 2029.
Before its partnership with Tink, Splitwise users needed to leave the app and manually initiate payments through their online banking platforms to settle balances. The integration of Tink’s open banking technology now allows users in France, Germany, and Austria to link their bank accounts and make payments in just a few clicks within the app.
Pay by Bank, an account-to-account payment method, is known for its simplicity and security. It enables users to authenticate transactions without entering data manually or navigating multiple redirects, delivering one of the most frictionless payment experiences available online.
Splitwise CEO and co-founder Jonathan Bittner said, “We pride ourselves in making the Splitwise user experience as secure and direct as possible. With Tink’s open banking technology, we are able to do just that. And after the success of the partnership in the UK, I’m thrilled that we can bring this feature to our users in France, Germany, and Austria.”
Tink head of payments Ian Morrin said, “Splitwise is a useful tool for users to take control of their finances, and a convenient way for consumers to manage their money and stay on top of who owes who what.
“We’ve had a great response in the UK after partnering last year, increasing the number of Tink account checks and PIS transactions on the app by 150% since the start of this year. We are excited to build on that working relationship with Splitwise by expanding into more markets across Europe.”
